Halloween and Christmas hog most of the seasonal movie fun, but we managed to come up with a list of films perfectly suited for the Thanksgiving spirit!

1

Life is Beautiful

Roberto Benigni commands this brilliant 1997 classic. In regard to the holiday season, it is important we stop to recognize our blessings and our health throughout these chaotic times. Life is Beautiful showcases a Jewish-Italian family caught in the middle of the Nazi Holocaust, reminding us all of the fragility of human life and the strength of familial ties. Benigni must make light of the horrible circumstances he and his family faces, utilizing relentless comedic relief and inspiring his son to keep hope throughout the pain.

2

It's a Wonderful Life

Although often associated with the Christmas spirit, It's a Wonderful Life is a great film to throw in around Thanksgiving. James Stewart stars as George Bailey, whose guardian angel, Clarence, intervenes on his suicidal contemplations to show him what value his existence truly carries. By illustrating a world without George's interaction, Clarence illuminates the positive impact and the relationships fostered around George, inspiring a new perspective and change of heart committed to his family and his community. It's a Wonderful Life is a great catalyst for reflection, gratitude and service.

3

50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star in this comedic — yet appropriate — perspective on cancer. The two are co-workers and best friends, but when Gordon-Levitt is diagnosed with a malignant tumor in his spine and normality soon shifts to chemotherapy, their relationship evolves into an entirely new realm. Take the time to appreciate your support system and your irreplaceable friendships this Thanksgiving.

4

Benny and Joon

An often-overlooked Johnny Depp classic, Benny and Joon examines love, friendship and family in some of life's unexpected places. It's lighthearted and fun on the outside: Depp plays an eccentric Buster Keaton fan who falls, quite literally, head over heels for the "ill" sister, Joon of the man, Benny , who took him under his roof. The film also highlights sensitive issues of identity, acceptance, sacrifice and healing. Although it never explicitly defines Joon's condition, I've always been reminded of the spunk and quirkiness exhibited by my younger sister, who has Autism, and personally, this film has always inspired me to remain thankful for the beautiful challenges and curveballs we all face in life. Sometimes the best answers are unconventional — like cooking grilled cheese with an iron!

5

Stepmom

This season is all about tradition. For many, although the holidays are chaotic, they symbolize a certain routine and functionality carefully disguised by all the last-minute shopping and cooking to pull it off. But what happens when the routine of life as a whole gets out of whack? What happens when your ex-husband brings a newer, younger mother figure into the picture who steps on your toes left and right? In addition, you've just been diagnosed with a fatal disease, and you're left with quite the conundrum. Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris and Julia Roberts star in this tale of purpose, promise and poise and the passing of the torch as our days go by and tradition is rattled. The film serves as a reminder that change is scary, and asking for help can be equally intimidating, but the persistence and grace of others around us can truly come to our rescue. Stepmom teaches us the importance of trust and acceptance, and the underlying element of mortality demands we appreciate every special moment we have in life.

Car talk with The Guilt Trip's Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen

Barbra Streisand is known for her amazing singing voice and long film career, but it's been a while since she's acted in a comedy. Find out what she told SheKnows about working with funny guy Seth Rogen, smoking pot and taking long drives with famous actors.

the_guilt_trip_car

In the film, Streisand and Rogen play a mother and son who go on a road trip from New York to San Francisco — but Streisand isn’t quite like Rogen’s real mom.

“My mom is more like [the] Barbra Streisand character in Meet the Fockers," said Rogen. "She’s more of a hippie. She's a social worker who talks about sex too much. She’ll, like, post on her Facebook about pap smears."

But Rogen does remember getting into a fight with his real mother.

“When I was 12, my mom spazzed and threw her keys at me, and I was like, whoa. We were in a car and I was close to her. Keys hurt, but words hurt more,” Rogen said as he laughed.

But Seth and Babs did enjoy hanging out together on set, which was never more than 45 minutes away from Streisand’s Malibu home.

“She tells really great stories!” said Rogen, then mentioned the one where Streisand went on a road trip with Marlon Brando.

“He [Brando] wanted to go the desert to see the wildflowers. Well, he wanted to stay overnight, but I told him I didn’t know him well enough,” said Streisand. “It was funny. It was a daytime trip and we went into a little hamburger joint with a creaky screen door and I was sitting there eating hamburgers, thinking, This is Marlon Brando!” she said before suggesting she might write more about it in a book someday.

Another one of Rogen’s favorite Babs stories is when she smoked pot with the actor Peter Sellers.

“I was married to Elliot and he [Sellers] was with Brit Ekland,” Streisand recalled before saying they had what seemed like a hilarious conversation about mixing up food, like eating “steak ice cream.”

Speaking of steak, Streisand’s character in The Guilt Trip eats a giant 50-ounce steak. She admitted she tried to get the director to cut the scene, but since the film is based on a true story and the writer’s mother really did eat a 50-ounce steak, she decided to do it.

“I ate that steak for three days, for my art,” she said, and confessed, “I don’t love steak, I’m afraid I’m going to choke on it. I love the first bite, and then it’s disgusting to me. At times we had to substitute watermelon — burn the watermelon and make it look like steak.” Ew.

Streisand said Rogen was funny on and off the screen, citing the fact that he started doing stand-up comedy when he was only 13.

The movie is a hilarious exploration into the mother-son relationship and the struggles of a young man desperately trying to gently outgrow the eternal hand of a helicopter mom.

Rogen's on a mission to make a name for himself but when Babs catches wind of his upcoming business endeavors, she can't resist squeezing her way into the agenda — and the passenger seat. Like any good son, Rogen doesn't have the heart to leave her out of the equation, though he constantly finds himself shaking his head at all the embarrassing moments that follow.

From parking lot mishaps to board room blunders, this hysterical duo keeps it real throughout the whole film.

His mom may be a cook, but Rogen loves her all the more for her everlasting support and comedic relief. Yeah, she may be getting into the wrong car from time to time, but that doesn't change the fact she's his biggest fan and when he loses the drive on his big dreams, he's thankful to have her there to kick him back into gear.

Bab's lil' boy is becoming a man and we're happy to watch it all unfold.

Keep the laughter rolling and check out The Guilt Trip, in theaters Dec. 19!

The Guilt Trip movie review: The comedic duo of the year

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen are the hilarious, must-see duo of the year in this mother and son road-trip movie that’s sure to have you chuckling. Sit back, put on your seat belt, and laugh.

The Guilt Trip

5 Stars: The perfect movie to see with your mother

Andie Brewster is a good son, even if he did move all the way across the country to get away from his controlling mother, Joyce .

Andie’s dream since he was in grade school was to be an ecologist. Now, having invested every penny he has into a new, environment-friendly cleaning spray, he’s going to pitch his product to outlets such as Costco.

Before Andie starts out on the road from New York, he decides to squeeze in a quick visit with his mom. Well-meaning and loving to a fault, Joyce is beside herself with joy just to be hanging out with her son. But she’s also a master manipulator, the way only moms can be, and makes Andie feel terribly guilty for not spending more time with her.

The Guilt Trip

Widowed now for many years, Joyce has little to occupy her time. Andie urges her to date, and maybe she’ll even fall in love. Joyce confesses that she was in love once, before she married Andie’s father. Then the big shocker:  Andie is even named for this mystery man.

Andie gets an idea — if he could find the mystery man, whose name and company he knows, maybe his mother could rekindle some romance with him all these years later and stop guilt-tripping Andie. After some Googling and phone calls, he locates the man in San Francisco, and the best part is he’s not married.

Without sharing this info with his mom, he invites her to accompany him on his trip. How bad could a week with the woman who birthed him be?

The bickering starts immediately at the rental car office, where Joyce persuades Andie to skip the SUV he reserved and opt for a cheaper subcompact that looks more like a roller skate then an automobile.

Sure enough, it starts to snow and the car breaks down next to a strip club. Luckily, a really sweet and mechanically inclined stripper is able to help out, even offering Andie a lap dance.

The Guilt Trip

The conflict continues to pay off with big laughs, especially when his mother decides to enter a competition to eat a 50-ounce steak in less than an hour.

The screenwriter, Dan Fogelman, based the script on a real-life road trip he took with his mother, creating a warm, loving and incredibly funny homage to her.

What’s lovely about this guilt trip is that in addition to annoying each other, Andie and Joyce get to know each other in a very deep way, each garnering new respect for the other.

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen have incredible comedic chemistry. I can’t imagine any other actors in these roles. Much of the dialogue is improvised and hilarious.

Bottom line: This movie is smart, fun, and relatable — the surprise ending brought tears of joy to my eyes. Enjoy!

Barbra Streisand mothers Seth Rogen in The Guilt Trip

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen talk about their roles as a mother-son duo in The Guilt Trip with SheKnows correspondent Whitney English and her own mom!

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, The Guilt Trip

The last person you'd probably expect to star in a movie with risque comedian Seth Rogen is the prim and proper Barbra Streisand. But these two balanced each other perfectly in their new film The Guilt Trip, even falling into their mother-son roles off-camera.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW

To promote the film, the duo chatted with SheKnows' own mother-daughter pair, me and my mom, Patti English. It was easy to see instantly that Barbra had developed a type of maternal bond with her co-star Rogen, giving him her seal of approval on his new haircut.

"I always loved to fix [his hair]," said Barbra of her on-set mommying of Seth. "I just cut my hair without telling her I was going to," Seth joked in return. "I love it. I saw it last week and I admired it," Barbra praised.

As a mother to her 45-year-old son Jason, Barbra has a lot of experience dealing with a growing young man. She told us that she and Jason are so close that she only did this movie after he signed off on it.

"The biggest point of me accepting the movie role was reading it with my son," she told us. "He was recovering from back surgery and we were in his bed reading it. When he gave me the 'ups' that he liked it, I did it."

In the movie, Seth plays Andy, a young man trying to sell a product he's developed by taking meetings across the country. Streisand plays his mother, Joyce, who comes along for the ride. The entire trip, the two deal with the classic parent-child dilemma of "mother knows best."

"I think when you're around your parents and you're in your 30s or late 20s you revert back to a teenage version of yourself," Seth admitted. "I find myself being short with them, and not treating them with respect. It's hard not to do."

Barbra acknowledged that she, too, played the opposite with her own son growing up.

"That's the nature of relationships with your children," said Streisand. "We think we know better. Children have to find out for themselves. Your mother could tell you everything. That is the moral of the story, Mother is always right."

I know my mom certainly agrees with her, and I usually end up agreeing as well!

Director Anne Fletcher calls The Guilt Trip her “love letter to moms”

It’s the ultimate mommy-date movie of the season: The Guilt Trip. Director Anne Fletcher tells us where she got her hilarious ideas for Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen’s mother-son duo.

Guilt Trip poster

The Guilt Trip director Anne Fletcher really loves her mom. So much so that she brought her mom along for our recent interview about her new mommy dramedy.

"She loved the movie," Anne told SheKnows as she looked over at her mother who had flown in from Detroit to support her daughter. "I see it as a love letter to moms in a sense, because they are crazy, and wild and out of their minds. But at the end of the day, they’re your mom. They’re just crazy but they mean well."

WATCH OUR INTERVIEW WITH ANNE

Fletcher drew ideas for her characters Andy and his mom Joyce from experiences with her own mom.

“It’s based on the relationship with my mother," said Fletcher. The story follows Joyce and Andy as they embark on a road trip to sell a new product he has developed. Along the way she repeatedly nags her son and gives him unsolicited advice. Despite Joyce ultimately being right, the bickering produces several funny — and also emotional — scenes between the two.

"[Joyce] has so many suggestions that no one has asked for, which I think most mothers do, and they’re mostly right," said Fletcher. "It’s a mom thing."

And Barbra and Seth made a very convincing mother and son, probably because Barbra was motherly toward Seth off-camera as well!

"It was an instinct thing," said Fletcher. "Their chemistry was instantaneous. I think Barbra is maternal to anyone. And Seth is such a sweet, and kind and generous person, that you just can’t help it. Barbra just can’t help being mom on and off camera."

Catch Anne Fletcher’s "love letter" this holiday season with your own mom, in theaters today!

Valentine's Day movies for him and her

$

Here's the deal, ladies: We men — though it may be last-minute, nearly every time — go to great lengths to show our love for you each Valentine's Day. The least we could ask for in return is one romantic holiday without The Notebook. But because we care so much, we'll keep Gosling in the equation.

Compromise has such a heavy connotation to it — especially within the context of a holiday like Valentine's Day, which is so heavily focused on loving your better half and stepping outside your norm to make sure they know you care about them.

That being said, I think I speak on behalf of most men when I say that we'd like just one lazy Valentine's Day afternoon without the interruption of Dirty Dancing, Ghost, P.S. I Love You or — dare I say it — the damned Twilight Saga.

Take the ultimate love & sex survey, here!>>

Look, we appreciate a love story just as much as y'all, but can we please make an effort to find some movies we'll both agree on? I promise the following films will hold your attention — and as stated, I've managed to keep Ryan Gosling in the mix.

It's a win-win.

1

Drive

Though we may be eternally jealous of your ongoing infatuation with Mr. Gosling, this is one flick we'll actually enjoy with you. Drive is an intense love story about a professional getaway driver who lands in a world of trouble when he decides to help out his beautiful neighbor . Naturally, the two fall for each other.

2

Knocked Up

I think men love this movie because it's something we can relate to. In poetic terms, we, too, were once the misguided, immature bachelors of society; that is, of course, until you came along and swept us off our feet, ultimately growing us into the men we are today. Okay, so maybe Knocked Up isn't the picture-perfect love story, but Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl star in one of the more realistic portrayals of a one-night stand turned dedicated relationship. The laughs throughout will keep both sexes entertained. If you like this, be sure to check out Judd Apatow's self-proclaimed "sort of sequel"This is 40, starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.

3

The Princess Bride

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya," and though I may be slightly embarrassed to admit this, we dudes can actually appreciate this fairy tale love story that was released in 1987. Packed full of comedy and adventure, this film is about the beautiful blossoming of Buttercup and Westley's relationship.

4

Bull Durham

To paraphrase , veteran catcher Crash Davis believes in "the soul, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curveball, good scotch and long, slow ,deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days." If that doesn't grab your attention, no baseball film ever will. Bull Durham is witty and provocative and features some of the best lines ever heard on the big screen. And there's absolutely no denying it's a Susan Sarandon grand slam as jersey-chaser Annie Savoy. Women will appreciate the men in tight pants, and men will love you even more for entering the Church of Baseball.

5

Good Will Hunting

Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver, Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgard — arguably in their prime — Good Will Hunting is an unforgettable story of friendship, the search for self-worth, healing, purpose and a wicked-smart tale of love. "How ya like dem apples?" This one's man-approved all the way and we know you ladies dig some time with Mr. Damon and Mr. Affleck.

6

No Strings Attached

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher discover the fine line between the utopian idea of friends with benefits and real, legitimate, serious love. Watch as they break all the rules, cross boundaries and uncover their passion in the hilarious romcom No Strings Attached. Perhaps this is your story — maybe it's not — either way, this thing is awesome for guys and gals.

7

500 Days of Summer

Okay, so this one can be a bit touchy on Valentine's Day as it doesn't quite play out the happy ending we all had in mind, but the fact remains, 500 Days of Summer is one of the most honest love movies out there to date. Joseph Gordon-Levitt reveals his healing process through a number of flashbacks, examining brilliant moments of victory and defeat with his wonderful girlfriend, Summer . This flick is spot-on when it comes to illustrating the woeful, defeated, Smiths-driven soundtrack of melancholy life on the single track which can be so upturned when one finds the perfect counterpart. 500 Days of Summer will reignite the fate that brought you and your babe together, while steering clear of cliché.

8

Casablanca

We had to throw in a classic. This is the stuff that musters up our ideas of Hollywood love, and Casablanca is a timeless hit for anyone with heartstrings. Featuring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid.

Shhh! Super-secret leaked Super Bowl ads

$

Old people act like teenagers, Kate Upton washes a car, a white guy takes on a "hey mon!" Jamaican accent to cheer up his coworkers and more picks and pans from this Sunday's Super Bowl commercials.

Beyonce onstage before Super Bowl

Sometimes, the Super Bowl commercials are better than the game itself. So why not spoil it with these leaked Super Bowl ads?

This almost two-minute spot from Mercedes-Benz pits an everyguy against Willem Dafoe, in a bit of spot-on typecasting as the devil, offering the man a Mercedes and "everything that goes with it" if he'll sign over his soul. "Everything" turns out to involve posing on the red carpet with Kate Upton, being able to win a dance-off with Usher and competing in a NASCAR race.

*Sigh* It's more "buy this and you'll be cool" advertising, but here it is anyway. Fun to hear "Sympathy for the Devil," anyway.

Upton is all over Mercedes: In another leaked spot, she has a group of men in football jerseys wash a car for her as she plays with her hair.

Budweiser's tear-jerker, scored by all-time downer song "Landslide" commercial tells a man-meets-horse love story as a tiny Clydesdale becomes a great big advertising trademark for an inexplicably popular American lager.

Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd are called to pitch ideas for Super Bowl commercials to Bob Odenkirk , but can't use the words Super Bowl, 49ers or Ravens. Probably this one was funnier on paper, though Odenkirk does make some funny "shush" faces. What is this commercial for, anyway? Samsung? All righty.

In a painfully icky commercial for GoDaddy.com, Bar Refaeli soul-kisses a nerd, with loud smacking noises sure to turn off any dental-phobe.

"Old people consume product, act like young people" is a tried-and-true advertising trope, but this Taco Bell take is pretty well done. I like the guy who flashes his nipple and leers at the diners.

And Volkswagen has already irritated lots of people with its "get happy" commercial featuring a white guy with a big, broad Jamaican accent. "Who want to come with I?" he asks, loading coworkers into his VW. Ugh.

Seth Rogen moves behind the camera for The Interview

Seth Rogen is a man of many talents. The actor is stepping behind the camera for his upcoming film The Interview. Rogen will direct the comedy that could also star James Franco.

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen is no stranger to multi-tasking. He's already an experienced actor, writer and producer. Now, he's adding director to his résumé. This summer, Rogen makes his directorial debut with This is the End, which he'll follow up with The Interview.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rogen's been confirmed to direct, produce and star in the film. It's a comedy that could reunite him with frequent collaborator James Franco . Franco hasn't signed on yet but he's the top candidate for the lead.

James Franco set to direct Beautiful People>>

The Interview was written by Rogen and his creative/business partner Evan Goldberg. The story centers on "a handsome talk-show host [possibly Franco] and his producer [Rogen] who find themselves in way over their heads when they get involved in a plot to assassinate the prime minister of North Korea."

Does that sound outlandish? Absolutely, but so did the plot to Pineapple Express and look how great that turned out. The film is being produced for Columbia Pictures, who are excited for another Rogen-Goldberg project.

Dark Knight flies higher than Pineapple Express>>

While you're waiting for The Interview to come together, prepare yourself for This is the End. The film stars Rogen, Franco, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel and a slew of celebrity cameos. Everyone from Emma Watson to Jason Segel and Rihanna are set to appear.

This is the End hits theaters June 14.

This is the End's Seth Rogen's wants to die with Beckham

The cast of This is the End reveals who they'd really want to be with in the apocalypse and how the idea originated.

Seth Rogen

Comedy's superheroes Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride, and writer and director Evan Goldberg recently attended the comic book convention Wondercon where they promoted their upcoming movie This is the End. A story about a house filled with celebrities during the apocalypse, the cast admitted to SheKnows who they would really like to spend it with.

Danny McBride was sentimental in claiming he'd stick with the cast of the movie: "This is a good crew to hang out with in the apocalypse," while Craig Robinson impartially said, "I’m very big on living in the moment." However, Rogen and Goldberg revealed they would spend their last days with David Beckham. At first Seth admitted it would be his wife in case she read this article, but then changed his answer, siding with Evan's suggestion. "OK, fine. David Beckham, then my wife."

Who knew these friendly fellas had a bromance for Beckham? Could the feeling be mutual? Maybe David should invite Seth to dinner? They could talk about making a sequel starring Beckham as the soccer star hero who bunks it up with a group of funny celebrities to survive the death of Hollywood.

So how did they come up with the idea of turning the apocalypse into a funny movie? Seth says the idea for This is the End began from a short film he and his buddy Jason Stone of USC made years ago. They played two friends stuck in a house during the apocalypse. From there they evolved the same idea to include a bunch of people who played themselves.

Danny McBride says that it is the perfect genre for Wondercon fans because "I think the apocalypse you don’t really see in a comedic way. I think it’s something that’s fresh for these guys." After all, he says, "Everyone knows that the apocalypse is very wonderful." Who knew the end of the world could be so funny!

Who would you spend the apocalypse with? Would it be with someone you know, or perhaps your favorite celebrity?

This is the End will be in theaters June 12.

Our favorite celebs meet their grizzly deaths in This is the End

This is the End shows us what happens when our favorite comedic actors get together. Who knew the end of the world could be so funny!

This is the End

Our favorite celebs battle it out in the boardroom on Celebrity Apprentice, but what would happen if there was a celebrity apocalypse? This is the End is a hilarious portrayal of our favorite celebrities' impending doom during the end of the world. While attending a party at James Franco's house, the world outside begins to crumble in a series of catastrophic events, trapping celebrity partiers Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson and many others in a house together. Sounds like fun! Being doomed with James Franco by your side is not so bad.

Exploring the fun and crazy situations they face during the end of the world, fans can expect the unexpected. Imagine working with a group of comedic actors on a film with no boundaries. While most of the movie is scripted, Danny McBride says, "We improvised all the time, but Seth and Evan wrote it, yet they would really encourage us to stay off the page. That’s where you get a lot of the best stuff, too. You’re reacting naturally to something funny or something mean. There’s a lot of improv."

In addition to the organic funny moments, the cast opened up about what really tickled them during filming. Director and writer Evan Goldberg says, "I just remember making Jonah Hill laugh so hard he had to take a three-minute break. That was my proudest moment." Seth adds, "He literally couldn’t do it because Evan pitched him a line and we had to stop shooting for five minutes until he gathered himself. That was the hardest I’ve ever seen anyone laugh."

Craig Robinson tells us to be on the lookout for one of his favorite moments in the movie: "I’m going to call it the water scene, when McBride goes to drink the water. I would look out for that on the bloopers, because we could not get through this take. There was one person laughing, then another one." McBride agrees that the funniest moments are "basically any scene I’m in the movie is one of my favorite scenes," but that "everything in this movie is funny."

Let's just hope that no one pees their pants watching these hilarious scenes. In the trailer, due to dwindling supplies, Craig Robinson admits to drinking his own pee. However, would these funny guys really go to such extreme measures during the end of the world? "To drink your pee, or not to drink your pee?" Craig tells SheKnows that he has never done so, but that he's "a never say never kinda dude." Rogen consented that he would also drink his pee: "Who wouldn’t. Between dying and pee drinking, you’d drink your pee."

Have no fear of this apocalyptic comedic collaboration. This is the End is coming to a theater near you June 18.

Why we're girlcrushin' on MTV Trailblazer Emma Watson

$
0
0
We first fell under Emma Watson’s spell in 2001, when she appeared as bushy-haired smarty-pants Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Fast forward seven sequels, and the precocious 11-year-old witch from the first film transformed into a super-chic actress taking on progressively grown-up roles. Here are a few reasons why we’re smitten with this year’s MTV Trailblazer.

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson at the MTV Movie Awards 2012She’s ballsy

Having closed the chapter on sweet, naïve Hermione, Emma is forging full speed ahead into far racier roles. In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, she plays the first love of an introvert with some serious psychological stuff on his plate. In her upcoming, based-on-a-true-story movie The Bling Ring, she plays the ringleader of a group of vapid, manipulative young adults who use the internet to keep tabs on celebrities so they can rob their homes. In photo shoots for the film, Emma further shed her inhibitions… and her clothes! In one still, she’s in her panties. In another, she’s showing off her bra. But she never comes across as raunchy — rather, her calculated brazenness just makes us admire her fearlessness.

Hermione wasn’t all fiction — Emma’s smarts are legit

It’s no secret Hermione was the smartest witch around. As it turns out, the role wasn’t such a stretch for Emma. In addition to her brilliant acting ability, Emma flexes her impressive smarts by attending Brown University — one of the country’s premier Ivy League universities. The brainy thespian matriculated into the student body in 2009, shortly after wrapping up the last Harry Potter film in the franchise. She took two breaks from Brown — once to complete a semester abroad at prestigious Oxford University, and another to pursue film roles like The Bling Ring. Now she’s back with her nose in her books, happy to be among her fellow academics.

We want to raid her closet

While we were sad to see the Harry Potter saga come to an end, we were elated to finally see Emma get out of those dowdy robes. She’s hit the red carpet since in everything from a lacy Valentino minidress to a voluminous Oscar de la Renta gown — and she rarely misses the mark. What’s more, Emma proves to be a style darling committed to ethical fashion. In 2009, she announced collaboration with People Tree, a Fair Trade Fashion Company, on their spring/summer collection. In 2011, she collaborated with Alberta Ferretti on a line of environmentally friendly dresses dubbed Pure Threads. Of such endeavors, the actress asserts, “I'm happy to encourage anyone interested in making conscientious clothing from raw, sustainable materials, so much so that I'll work for free.”

She kicks major a**, literally

Emma stars alongside a slew of celebs in the apocalyptic comedy This is the End, hitting theaters in June. One of those co-stars happens to be funny guy Seth Rogen, who does triple duty in the film as the writer, director and star. When they began filming, Seth proposed a scene out-of-character for mild-mannered Emma — a scene in which she and Seth argue. “She was into it. We wrote her the role and we sent it to her and we said, ‘It’s a little crazy, but we think you’d be really funny doing it.’ And she was totally game,” Seth told MTV News, laughing, “and it was awesome and she beats the sh** out of me in the movies, which may have been one of the reasons she was so psyched about it.”

While the 2013 MTV Movie Awards did a pretty good job of honoring a wide variety of films this year, including indies like Silver Linings Playbook, Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, there are a few indie flicks that they missed.

SheKnows takes a look at five great indie films you won't see at this year's MTV Movie Awards.

Celeste and Jesse Forever

Parks and Recreation's Rashida Jones wrote this charming film with Will McCormack and she stars alongside Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg. The story focuses on love and friendship and how it can get complicated along the way. Samberg turns in a heartfelt performance while Jones is trying to keep it all together in her personal and her professional life. Fans of Samberg will be pleasantly surprised that he is indeed more than just a comedian.

To Rome, With Love

While this Woody Allen film certainly didn't have the traction that his 2011 film Midnight in Paris did, To Rome, With Love continues the director's love letter to Europe. With a stellar cast featuring Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis and Alec Baldwin, the four vignettes feature the best of Allen's comedy and demonstrate why he's been a prolific filmmaker over the decades.

Take This Waltz

Audiences missed this movie as it came and went quickly from theatres, but with stars like Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen continuing their streak of excellence on the silver screen, Take This Waltz is a cannot-miss. film. Director Sarah Polley, whose first film Away From Her garnered critical acclaim, proves she isn't a one-hit wonder behind the lens. Watch this film as it takes you through a love triangle that is truly the anti-romantic comedy. Its steamy sensuality and the yearning for love will have you discussing the movie post-viewing.

The Intouchables

It's the second highest grossing non-English film ever, but don't let the word "foreign film" turn you off. This is an inspirational film that follows the friendship of a rich quadriplegic and a troubled young Senegalese man hired to be his live-in caretaker. It was distributed by The Weinstein Company, so you know Harvey definitely liked it.

Searching For Sugar Man

While it is true that the MTV Movie Awards don't honor documentaries, Searching For Sugar Manswept the documentary category during awards show season, including the Oscars. However, this true story is the perfect film for music fans. The documentary follows two South Africans who are in search of their musical hero, 1970s rocker Rodriguez. The story that develops is intriguing and amazing and it should not be missed.
