The Green Hornet review

The Green Hornet movie review must begin and end with the fact that this project has bounced around for decades. The manner that the film has hit the big screen -- with normally-comic actor Seth Rogen as the titular hero -- speaks to not only the talent of Mr. Rogen, but also fate, serendipity and a little bit of Cameron Diaz.

After witnessing The Green Hornetin 3D, we marveled at the cinematic awareness of Rogen, with the heavy hands of help from director Michel Gondry, the film's producers and the studios behind it all -- Columbia Pictures and Sony. Not only did the studio get behind Rogen and his Green Hornet team when others questioned, but they also forfeited pure profit for the sake of the art of the film.

Green Hornet star Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen told us that a certain auto manufacturer offered millions of dollars to the studio to develop a Black Beauty -- the crime-fighting duo's bad-ass weaponized car -- but it was very 2011. The creative team got their wish and the black 1965 Chrysler Imperial Crown is still the auto of choice for The Green Hornet.

That is merely an example of how The Green Hornetworks. The film was allowed to flourish. Forget about lowered expectations for a movie that has been questioned since its infancy. What is magical about The Green Hornet is its ability to unapologetically take the audience into the world of Britt Reid .

Britt's father is a hero of the city of LA and his sudden and mysterious death thrusts Britt into a leadership role in the publishing industry and shakes his very core as a human being. Rogen's script has his character confront the demons of the city itself in the form of criminals which essentially serves as therapy for his own personal monsters. Yes, this is not a Freudian film, it is pure fun.

Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz in The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet kicks into gear when Kato , an employee of Britt's father, returns to show him how to make a perfect cup of coffee and so much more.

Through Rogen's eyes, we see the promise of what's next as he gets to know Kato, the auto mechanic who makes a brilliant cup of joe. Once Rogen sees the awesomeness of Kato's automotive and weapons luster -- not to mention his martial arts expertise -- pulling for Rogen to relieve his paternal guilt and angst while taking out the city's evil doers becomes a blast as an audience member.

There are many Rogen"Whoa, that is so cool" moments in The Green Hornet. But, it works. The reason is that through director Michel Gondry's handiwork, the marvel of what Kato does is experienced through the naïve nothingness-to-explosively-thrilled Rogen in his pitch perfect performance.

Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet

Speaking of Chou and his Kato, without him, the film doesn't take off. A huge international star who recently played a sold-out concert, complete with an N Sync in their prime screaming audience, at LA's Staples Center days before the film's premiere, Chou is worth the price of admission alone. His Kato is both funny, fantastic and phenomenal. Chou not only possesses meticulous martial arts abilities, but also is effortless playing off comical Rogen.

Jay Chou in The Green Hornet

The "bad guy" in The Green Hornet is Christoph Waltz, an Oscar winner for his role in Inglourious Basterds. His Chudnofsky is definitely evil, but in a very different way than his Nazi character in Tarantino's film. Cameron Diaz is underused, but she does buck a superhero movie stereotype with her character which is awesome to finally see.

Will there be more Green Hornet?

If nothing else, we would love to see where Rogen takes The Green Hornet car next. It is a joy that the project, after falling through so many hands, landed in the grasp of Seth Rogen.

Skinny Jonah Hill sheds 30 pounds

Superbad actor Jonah Hill can no longer be typecast as the fat and funny guy, as he has slimmed down and shaped up. Can a skinny Jonah Hill still be funny? Some are saying no! What do you think?

Jonah Hill

Actor Jonah Hill rose to fame in movies like Superbad, Get Him to the Greekand Forgetting Sarah Marshall as the chubby, funny guy. It looks like the 27-year-old is shedding some of that image, along with his weight.

Hill reportedly wanted to get in shape before his high-action movie 21 Jump Street, based on the hit '80s TV show starring Johnny Depp. A friend of Hill's said he "went on a diet for the movie, but gained weight at first!"

The 5-foot-7 actor reportedly lost 30 pounds! "Finally, he got a nutritionist and a trainer. Now he looks better and feels better!" the source tells Us Magazine.

Citing celebs like Drew Carey, John Goodman and Seth Rogen, E! Online says some think that his weight loss will make him less funny. "If he gets too slim, he'll stop being the 'fat, funny' guy and he'll need to do something else to set himself apart from the rest,"says a comic insider.

"Pretty interesting that even the popular schlubby guys are feeling the heat to look better and hotter."

Tell us: Do you think a skinny Jonah Hill will be as funny as a fat Jonah Hill?

He's the cutest alien since E.T. and he eats live birds. Don't miss our scoop on the new film Paul!

Paul is already out in the UK and it beat Elton John's Gnomeo and Juliet at the box office. So, what is Paul all about?

Paul stars Simon Pegg, Kristen Wiig, Nick Frost and Seth Rogan, yes that's Seth Rogan!

Paul stars the very funny Simon Pegg and Nick Frost , plus SNL's Kristen Wiig. Paul the alien is voiced by Seth Rogen.

British nerds Graeme and Clive are in the US to hit Comic-Con and take a road trip across country to see the sites. After checking out Area 51, they see a car crash. When they stop to help, they're met by Paul, a little green guy who crashed there decades ago.

Now, SheKnows has seen the film and it's pretty damn funny. Paul has influenced pop culture since he landed, including taking meetings with Spielberg. He gives a rather comforting argument about why anal probes are not part of alien abductions. And he's got some rather heavy hitters on his tail. Sigourney Weaver anyone?

Sigourney Weaver stars in Paul

On the road, they pick up the ultra-religious Ruth who has her mind blown by the existence of aliens. Oh yeah, if you're easily offended, you may want to skip this one. If you're not, you're going to have a blast.

Paul will hit theaters in the US March 18.

Nick Frost chats Paul

Paul star Nick Frost fell into show business. Ask anyone who has seen his first work on the British comedy classic Spaced and they'll agree: Frost is one funny man.

But the reason why Nick Frost found show business is that he was an aimless twenty-something and his friend Simon Pegg urged him to join his new show and the rest was history.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Paul

Pegg and Frost first hooked up on the big screen with the indie smash Shaun of the Dead in 2004 and re-teamed in 2007's Hot Fuzz. The pair has impeccable comic timing that is on display in droves with their new comedy, Paul. Paul is voiced by Seth Rogen and is an alien that was stranded decades ago near Area 51. When he breaks out to try to go back home he runs into some car trouble and two seemingly helpless nerds on a Mecca-like journey across the Southwest visiting supposed alien hotspots.

In Paul, Pegg and Frost's characters land in San Diego to attend the geek-fest Comic-Con and then drive their rented RV towards Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico's Area 51. Coming up on a car crash, the pair stops to help the accident victim and they meet Paul. Frost hilariously faints as Pegg uses the moment in the film to showcase his impressive comic talents. Thus, the true story of Paul begins and the race to help the cute, little alien in his mission to return home.

Nick Frost phoned SheKnows from New York City for an exclusive chat about the process of making Paul and why he and Simon Pegg have such perfect comic chemistry.

Paul: Nick Frost exclusive interview

SheKnows: Why is it that you like working with that wry fellow, Mr. Simon Pegg?

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at the Paul premiere

Nick Frost: Well, apart from the obvious of just saying he's my best mate, which I think people are getting bored with us going on about our friendship, I think the fact that he's a friggin' good actor and he's a great comedian and he has a great sense of what's funny and when to drop it, so to speak. That's why we enjoy working together. We've been together quite a long while and I often know what Simon is going to do before he does it which makes my job very easy -- and the same for him as well.

SheKnows: What was the biggest challenge that you had making Paul? Was it acting to an alien that wasn't there?

Nick Frost: Yeah, essentially. The biggest challenge is trusting double negatives and all the guys involved in making Paul, that when they say that Paul is going to be great you trust them because he's not there at all and it still hinges on whether or not as a piece of technology Paul works. Within five minutes of seeing Paul and he sucks, the film is finished. You have a lot of trust in the effects guys that they know what they're doing.

SheKnows: What was it like filming out in the desert in America? That had to be a unique experience for you as a UK citizen.

Nick Frost: It was amazing. We were in Santa Fe, New Mexico for three-and-a-half months. The beauty of Santa Fe, it gave us every kind of scenery we needed. Some days we were standing on these vast plains and then other days we were in deep pine forests, and then we were in the desert. The original idea of Paul came from us sitting around on a break while filming in the UK when the rain crippled us. We said, "Wouldn't it be great to shoot somewhere where it doesn't rain?" That became Area 51. It wasn't a big jump from that to Paul. The thing that none of us realized is that New Mexico has a lot of rain [laughs].

Nick Frost on the women of Paul

SheKnows: I wanted to ask you about the actresses in this film. First off, Blythe Danner, the legend, is just a great, great woman. How did you find the experience of working with her?

Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig and Simon Pegg in Paul

Nick Frost: She knocks you on the head. She is a great, great woman. She's a wonderful actress and just as a person, she just comes and gives it her all. She's honest. She's charming and funny. She's very maternal. Often on set she'll give you a little massage and she'll have a little technique and get her elbows in and try to loosen you up a bit. We hung out -- this film more than any. That included Blythe, Sigourney and Jason Bateman. To see someone that you admired for so long actually turn up on set and they are everything you imagined that they would be and more, it's a treat. It's a real treat.

SheKnows: And then Kristen Wiig, somebody with such great comic timing, what did you make of her performance in Paul?

Nick Frost: If you think she's good on-screen, you should see her off-screen as well. She's so charming and clever and quick. She's not afraid of anything and she's comically perfect.

Seth Rogen is Paul

SheKnows: And the voice of Paul, I was just curious if Seth Rogen was always the person you were going to use.

Nick Frost: As writers, Simon and I, whenever we'd get to a point where you write five or six pages then you'd try and act the scenes out to each another to see if it works, we'd sit there and whenever we did Paul's accent it was kind of a very gruff older American man. We were big fans of Rip Torn and Larry Sanders. I think we were fairly militant that we wanted this kind of voice and then Universal said, "What about Seth Rogen?" He has a tremendous pair of comedy chops. He's very popular and he has this amazing voice. It seemed really right for us that Seth would be Paul. We even went back and we wrote stuff with him in mind. We forget that Seth's in it. He's Paul.

Nick Frost's humble beginnings

SheKnows: What drew you to acting and comedy?

Nick Forst is on a mission in Paul

Nick Frost: It's a bit awkward for me to say but I've always been perceived by friends and family as the "funny one," so that was always in me. But in terms of acting, I never wanted to act at all. I'm not shy but it's a lot of pressure having lots of people look at you while you're trying to be funny. It's tough. It's not easy. But Simon wrote Spaced and said he'd like me to be in it. I did it for Simon to make him laugh [laughs]. I've been working ever since.

SheKnows: This is a silly question. Your hair and Simon's hair in Paul was kind of long for you guys. Was that a conscious decision for these two characters?

Nick Frost: This was just me being lazy [laughs]. I didn't want to cut my hair. Now, it's growing out to quite a nice kind of Bieber style [laughs].

SheKnows: What would you like audiences to know about Paul? What can they expect?

Nick Frost: I would like audiences to go in with no expectations and enjoy a hundred moments of popcorn and laughter. That's it. If people are coming out with a smile on their face thinking, "I really enjoyed that," that is enough for me.

Paul movie review

Early in Paul, audiences are introduced to how the alien of the title winds up in the middle of the desert of the American Southwest. It's early 1960s America and in a page borrowed from the legendary Area 51 lore, Paul has crash landed far from home.

Paulserves as the next comedic vehicle for UK comedy titans Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Paul is their first movie together filmed in the U.S. after the two UK hits Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Kristen Wiig and Simon Pegg star in Paul

After the initial crash sequence, Paul takes audiences to Comic-Con in San Diego and introduces Graeme Willy and Clive Gollings , two British sci-fi fans who have made a pilgrimage of sorts. After the San Diego geek fest, the pair hops into their rented RV for a tour of alien sighting hotspots across the Southwest.

After stopping at an alien-themed diner -- manned by the always terrific Jane Lynch -- the boys head out seeking more alien observation history. When a car in front of them crashes, they stop to help and have their own extraterrestrial experience. Graeme and Clive meet Paul, a cute little alien voiced by Seth Rogen.

In Pegg and Frost's Paul, they have assembled a top notch cast including Jason Bateman as a Federal Agent hot on Paul's trail, Kristen Wiig as a fundamental Christian they pick up while fleeing from the ever-approaching Bateman, Blythe Danner as the woman who first met Paul as a little girl years ago when his craft crashed in her field and Bill Hader as one of Bateman's federal agent associates.

Paul is a must-see because audiences haven't seen a comedy/sci-fi film quite like this. The film has action, suspense and of course a ton of humor that makes it unique in the movie market today. Pegg and Frost alone would make any film they make worthy of a look, but in Paul they have taken their comedic chemistry to new levels. Their use of sci-fi pop culture references is witty and smart. Just a hint: The scene where Paul is on the phone with Steven Spielberg giving him the idea for E.T. is priceless!

Seth Rogen is Paul in Paul

You don't have to be a sci-fi geek to appreciate Paul, either. There's romance, intrigue and as we said before, Paul is unlike anything out there.

Lastly, there is Paul himself as voiced by Seth Rogen. Rogen is impeccably cast as the voice of the alien. His demeanor, tone and characterization are the stuff of legend. If you think the look of the alien Paul is cute, add in the performance of Rogen and he is equally endearing and extraordinarily funny.

The Beastie Boys are coming back with their eighth album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, along with a new 30-minute movie, Fight for Your Right Revisited, to promote the May release. On the heels of the album's first single, Make Some Noise, comes the movie trailer, featuring Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, Ted Danson, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon and more!

The Beastie Boys trailer that has taken over the net is almost cool enough to stand on its own, but we're in luck: It's just a teaser! The Fight for Your Right Revisited 30-minute movie promises to be one wild, star-studded party that kicks off where the infamous 1986 Fight for Your Right video ended.

Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride in Fight for Your Right Revisited

Fight for Your Right Revisited features two sets of Beastie Boys, with the young crew played by Elijah Wood , Seth Rogen and Danny McBride and the crew from 25 years later played by Will Ferrell , John C. Reilly and Jack Black .

After a wild night, Ad-Rock, Mike D and MCA run into their older selves and are not impressed. How does a crew solve a scuffle with their other selves? With a breakdance battle, of course! "We bring a super-fresh, old-school throwdown dance contest from the future," Ferrell challenges.

During their wild NYC adventure, the Beasties run into characters played by the likes of Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, David Cross, Steve Buscemi, Ted Danson, Rainn Wilson, Amy Poehler, Alicia Silverstone, Rashida Jones, Chloe Sevigny, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci and Laura Dern.

The Beastie Boys, 2011

The real Beasties, Adam Horovitz , Mike Diamond and Adam Yauch , show up as cops who put an end to the scuffle between the battling Beasties.

The Beastie Boys' last hurrah was cut short when Yauch was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2009.

Hot Sauce Committee Part One, the first installment of their three-part album, was held back indefinitely and the tour was canceled.

A year and a half later, the first album still doesn't have a release date, but Hot Sauce Committee Part Two drops May 3, along with Fight for Your Right Revisited, which was directed by Yauch !

The band hopes to hit the road for an album tour, but only if Yauch is up for it. Word dropped in January that he is cancer free and recovering, but according to what Mike D told XFM London, it's still "kinda like week by week."

SheKnows is sending healing vibes to the recovering Beastie. In the meantime, for $74.99 fans get an HD copy of the full movie with a deluxe package preorder of the Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, plus a digital download of the new album, three bonus tracks, a poster and a t-shirt, as well as physical copies on both CD and vinyl.

Redbox new releases: Green Hornet comes home

There's a lot of action in the DVD, Blu-ray and OnDemand releases for this first weekend of May 2011 and at your local Redbox. Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet, Vince Vaughn's The Dilemma, Wilmer Valderrama's From Prada to Nada, Robin Williams' What Dreams May Come and Kyle MacLachlan's uplifting Mao's Last Dancer are among the new releases coming home. There's also some drama from Renée Zellweger and Forest Whitaker!

The inspiring Mao's Last Dancer hits Redbox and OnDemand!

Top Redbox releases this week

The movies currently winning the DVD rental battle include recent releases Black Swan, The King's Speech, Yogi Bear, Due Date, Skyline, The Tourist, Hereafter, Love and Other Drugs, Country Strong, Tron: Legacy, Tangled, The Fighter, 127 Hours, How Do You Know, The Switch, Sacrifice, Unstoppable, Life as We Know It, The Way Back and Rabbit Hole, but there are a lot of new contenders for the weekend of May 6 that just might intrigue.

For an uplifting tale, SheKnows' big recommendation is Mao's Last Dancer, starring Kyle MacLachlan, Bruce Greenwood and Joan Chen. Based on the bestselling autobiography of the same name, the film follows the life of Li Cunxin and his extraordinary journey from poverty to international stardom.

The Green Hornetis the biggest movie on the new release list and stars Seth Rogen as the unlikely hero and boasts a few writers from Superbad. Unfortunately, that didn't add up to the best reviews for the action comedy, but the action did land 2011 MTV Movie Award noms for costars Jay Chou and Christoph Waltz and might be the perfect hangover cure.

Ron Howard's The Dilemmacame in second to The Green Hornet in the box office races back in January, but the dramedy about what to do when you discover your best friend's wife is having an affair met with mixed reviews that skewed to the negative. It stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James and Jennifer Connelly.

Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr and Annabella Sciorra bring home What Dreams May Come, a visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death; while From Prada to Nada offers an updated, Latina spin on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, with Camilla Belle, Alexa Vega and Wilmer Valderrama in the starring roles.

Renée Zellweger & Forest Whitaker get deep in My Own Love Song

The Renee Zellweger-Forest Whitaker new release My Own Love Song is an indie film that didn't get a lot of play. It's hard to imagine that, considering it featured Zellweger, Whitaker, Nick Nolte and Madeline Zima, as well as music from Bob Dylan and direction by Olivier Dahan . If you're in the mood for a Southern road trip flick about friendship and lost family, this could be your ticket, but be warned: While it did hit theaters in France, in the U.S. My Own Love Song went straight from the festival circuit to video.

Other new flicks to check out include A Somewhat Gentle Man, Waiting for Forever, Sex, Lies & Death and Ninjas vs. Vampires. George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Keitel's From Dusk Till Dawn goes hi-def with a rerelease.

TV lovers may enjoy going back with classics like Boy Meets World: The Complete Fifth Season and Melrose Place: Sixth Season, Volume 1. From the more recent past, you can now check out Drop Dead Diva: The Complete Second Season, Make It or Break It: Season 1 V03, According to Jim: The Complete Third Season and the BBC import Being Human: Season Three.

You can also check out SheKnows' new release listing from last week for ideas.

Next week, Bieber Fever hits home with the release of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. No Strings Attached, Blue Valentine and AC/DC: Live at River Plate also come home.

Movie review: Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt equally matched in 50/50

If you’re gonna get sick, better have a fast-talking cut-up at your side to help you through those tough moments with a little laughter.

And that cut-up should be Seth Rogen. I mean, who wouldn't want this lovable hipster cracking jokes before and after each painful chemotherapy session? We would!

Seth Rogen

THE PLOT

Seth Rogen plays Kyle. He's best friends with Adam, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in the new film 50/50. Usually, Seth Rogen plays the main character, the guy with the problem, as seen in films like Knocked Up, The Green Hornet and Pineapple Express. He's typically the one who needs help from his best friend -– who is usually more dysfunctional and lost than he is -– to help him find the way. But this time, it's the other way around.

Man Candy Mondays: Joseph Gordon-Levitt  >>

Kyle is the bestie. And Adam is the one with the problem. He has cancer. Very advanced back cancer. And he's only 27.

THE Guys

The story takes place in the chilly Northwest. These two characters work together at a local public radio station. They're best friends, but total opposites. Adam is an anal-retentive risk adverse good guy, who doesn't smoke, drink, drive or do anything dishonest, except occasionally field calls from his over protective mother, played by Anjelica Huston.

Rogen's character Kyle, on the other hand, is a loud, obnoxious, pot-smoking freeloader who likes trolling bars for chicks. These two make a good pair, however odd it might be. And, when things get rough -- and they often do with advanced cancer -- Kyle is there to bring the laughs that Adam most undoubtedly needs.

Seth Rogen

The audience needs them, as well, as this is an emotional journey through the rise and fall of not only an illness, but a friendship, too. We see these two guys get along, then get on each other's nerves, then have a fight, then make up, then hang out and start all over again. Like any relationship, a friendship needs care. But the question is how much care can you give when you're going through a crisis? A crisis like dying of cancer. The answer: As much as you can, apparently, because like anything in life, a relationship is a balance of give and take.

It certainly is for these guys, and why wouldn't it be? Just because they are men doesn't mean they can't love each other like brothers. You know what I mean. 50/50 is essentially what many people might call a bromance . 50/50 has heart. It has emotion. It deals with mother-son relationships and last wishes and falling in love.

THE Funny

Rogen and Gordon-Levitt have good chemistry together, and we believe that they are the very best of friends. The comedy is good, but not over-the-top. Hard core fans of Rogen will delight in seeing him give a great performance but may be disappointed that the laughs are sometimes more bittersweet than downright hilarious.

Bryce Dallas Howard

THE ladies

The supporting cast includes Bryce Dallas Howard, the gorgeous, but love-to-hate girlfriend who feels "bad" about breaking up with a guy with cancer. Not that bad, mind you. She's delightfully fun as the inevitable she-villain.

Opposite Dallas Howard is an honest performance from Up in the Air's Anna Kendrick, who plays the therapist to Gordon-Levitt's character. She's precise, sincere and totally cute. The audience will root for her and soon become frustrated with him when he struggles to do anything about it.

Anna Kendrick

At the heart of the story, a man dying of cancer belongs with one of these ladies, if only he can make that choice while his life is falling apart. But if that's the situation you're in, who better to turn to for help than your best friend? And, his bestie is there for him, even when the audience thinks the slacker has given up.

The lesson these two ultimately have to learn is that no matter how rough life is, you can't take your buddies for granted. Friendship should always be a game of equal odds.

BOTTOM LINE: Honest, real and funny, 50/50 is a charming bromance with a whole lot of heart.

Seth Rogen marries longtime love Lauren Miller

Funnyman Seth Rogen has finally jumped the broom. The actor wed longtime girlfriend Lauren Miller over the weekend in an intimate and lighthearted ceremony.

Seth Rogen Wedding

On Sunday afternoon, actor-comedian Seth Rogen married the love of his life -- Lauren Miller. The duo exchanged vows in Sonoma, California amongst several celebrity guests including Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, and Judd Apatow.

A source told US Weekly, "The wedding was more laughs than anything else. Every other line was a joke and the crowd couldn't contain their laughter. It was nonstop fun!" After the ceremony, the happy couple drove off in a convertible, where they were escorted to the reception and partied the night away.

Rogen and Miller began dating in 2004 when Rogen was a staff writer on Da Ali G Show. The couple became engaged in September of last year and a few months later Rogen appeared on Conan and discussed his proposal anxiety.

Once he bought the ring, "Literally, I felt like someone had given me like a truckload of heroin to hold onto, I felt like the feds were going to kick in my door at any second," Rogen said. "I couldn't have a conversation with my girlfriend. All I could think of was this ring. Like, 'Don't say Lord of the Rings! Don't mention anything about a ring!"

Aside from his wedding, Rogen's other weekend project was the opening of his latest film50/50. The movie co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a twenty-something who's diagnosed with cancer. The film was based on the life of Rogen's close friend Will Reiser who fought the disease and beat it!

Seth Rogen defends James Franco over Oscar bomb

$

Seth Rogen says it's not his buddy James Franco's fault he bombed at the Academy Awards -- instead, we should blame the Oscar bosses.

Seth Rogen James Franco

James Franco totally bombed as co-host of the Academy Awards in February alongside the newly-engaged Anne Hathaway, but at least one person is standing by his side: fellow actor Seth Rogen.

Rogen is defending his Pineapple Express co-star Franco, saying it isn't the controversial actor's fault his performance sucked so hard -- it is the fault of the Oscar bosses who gave him age-inappropriate material.

"I think when you agree to do something like that, you put a certain amount of faith in the institution, hoping that they'll take care of you, and I feel like they didn't,"Rogen told Shortlist.

"Why hire James Franco and then give him Billy Crystal's monologue? It was like, 'Oh, we'll hire these young hosts and then we'll just do the same sh*t we do every f*cking year.'"

"Which to me was really odd. I think they just approached it wrong. They didn't think it through, and they were way underprepared. I think they hung him out to dry. So I wouldn't do it unless they hired some better writers."

Not that Rogen has to worry an invitation is shortcoming -- that old favorite Billy Crystal will be back at the 2012 Oscars after Eddie Murphy jumped ship. Sounds like the writers will already have some material for him.

Not that James Franco is sweating it. The jack of all trades has a hot new project coming up: He will direct and photograph the multimedia spring campaign for 7 For All Mankind, including both print and online video components.

"I'm not supposed to say too much, but we don't want to do something that feels very fashion-heavy,"explained Franco to Women's Wear Daily from Michigan, where he is currently filming Oz: The Great and Powerful. "It's a more natural kind of approach. It's not a heavy-handed fashion world sell-job. It's really about bringing the natural essence out of the performers and models."

Funnyman Seth Rogen knows what it takes to be a good host. Now we'll see if he can deliver as host of the Independent Spirit Awards.

Seth RogenAs the awards show host talent pool has seemingly diminished over the last few years, Seth Rogen has stepped up to host this year's Film Independent Spirit Awards, Rogen's rep has confirmed to SheKnows.com.

The awards ceremony will be held in Santa Monica on Sunday, Feb. 25 and will be broadcast 10 p.m. that night on IFC. The feeling is that Rogen will bring the funny.

"Seth is one of the smartest and funniest actors today and we look forward to him making this one of the most entertaining Spirit Awards yet," said Jennifer Caserta, executive vice president and general manager of IFC, to The Hollywood Reporter. "IFC is a growing brand for original comedy programming, and our viewers are in for a good time with Seth hosting."

Rogen is the executive producer of the Indie Spirit Award-nominated film 50/50 but he's perhaps best known for his raunchy comedic roles in major studio films like Pineapple Express, Knocked Up and Superbad.

It has been tough times for hosts of award shows recently. Ricky Gervais was criticized for his edgy zingers at the last Golden Globes, but he's set to return to the Globes on Jan. 15. James Franco and Anne Hathaway were lambasted for their jobs at last February's Academy Awards.

Rogen recently defended his friend Franco's Oscar-hosting work to Shortlist.com.

"I think when you agree to do something like that, you put a certain amount of faith in the institution, hoping that they'll take care of you, and I feel like they didn't. Why hire James Franco and then give him Billy Crystal's monologue?" Rogen said. "I think just approached it wrong. They didn't think it through, and they were way underprepared. I think they hung him out to dry. So I wouldn't do it unless they hired some better writers ."

Here's hoping Rogen has better luck -- and better writers -- at the Spirits.

Crowdrise and Firefox team up with celebrities to raise money for their favorite charities. Find out how you can get in on the action.

'Tis the time of year to do good — and celebrities are taking that to heart by signing on for the Mozilla Firefox Challenge to benefit Crowdrise.

CrowdRise and Mozilla reveal celebrity fundraiser

Twelve celebs — including Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Barbra Streisand and Will Ferrell— have signed to compete for a $25K prize for their favorite nonprofit. The goal? Raise the most money on the micro-giving site, Crowdrise.

"I like Crowdrise because I can help a great charity like Alzheimer's Association and do it without showering or getting out of my sweatpants,"Rogen said of why he's participating.

Us mere mortals can get involved, too — just go to the Crowdrise/Firefox Challenge page and start a campaign for your favorite charity. The person who raises the most money by Jan. 12, 2012, will get $25K for his or her fave charity.

You can also win some prizes, including "a poster from the film Milk, signed by Sean Penn, an iChat with Seth Rogen, a visit to the set of Arrested Development with Jason Bateman, and an outgoing voicemail greeting recorded by Paul Rudd," according to Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs.

"As part of Mozilla's commitment to making a difference, this holiday season we are hoping to get everyone in on the spirit of doing good," he said. "We share a vision of making big changes in the world through community and collaboration. We're excited to work together with Crowdrise to turn individual action into global impact."

Crowdrise was founded in 2010 by Edward Norton, Shauna Robertson and Robert and Jeffro Wolfe after they raised a bunch of cash for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust during the 2010 New York City Marathon.

"I'm thrilled so many of my friends in film wanted to join in this Mozilla Firefox Challenge," said Crowdrise co-founder Shauna Robertson.

"Mozilla is an open-source platform for innovation and Crowdrise is the same for the fundraising world," added Norton. "So it only made sense for us to join forces."

Seth Rogen predicted 50/50 Oscar shut out

What happened to 50/50? The touching comedy was one of the best films of 2011, yet it was completely snubbed by the Oscars. So what went wrong? The film's co-star Seth Rogen may have the answer.

Seth Rogen

Tuesday morning, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 2012 Oscars. As usual, many films, directors and actors didn't make the cut.

One of the biggest Oscar snubs was the cancer comedy 50/50, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen.

Both the film and Gordon-Levitt earned Golden Globe nominations in the Comedy or Musical category, but couldn't crack the Academy. What gives?

Last fall, 50/50 received lots of early Oscar buzz, but Rogen didn't believe the hype. The actor told Entertainment Weekly, "I know for a fact that some people are appalled by the movie."

The film tackles the sensitive and personal subject of cancer. It's something most people have been affected by in some shape or form. Will Reiser wrote the screenplay based on his battle with the disease and his humorous method of coping.

According to Rogen, "I think it must be people who have very, very personal connections to the subject matter and just can't emotionally disconnect from their own experience. I respect that. But what we found for the most part is that people like to laugh at tragedy. It makes them feel better."

There have been several award-winning films that center on cancer. The 1983 drama Terms of Endearment is a prime example. It dominated the Academy Awards, and won the Oscar for Best Picture, Director and Best Actress. But the film was a dark, dramatic piece that really pulled at your heartstrings. Whereas 50/50 takes the road less traveled.

"Often with films about cancer I think, 'Wow, what a creative endeavor! You made something sad seem sad for two hours. Congratulations!'" said Rogen. "If you're able to make that seem anything but completely miserable, I think creatively that's a real challenge."

If you missed out on 50/50's theatrical run, the film is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren Miller faced a scary situation this week -- a stranger jumped their fence and got comfortable in their front yard claiming voices inside his head directed him to Lauren.

Seth Rogen wife Lauren Miller victim of stalker.

Seth Rogen has truly made it in Hollywood: He now has a stalker. The thirty-year-old actor -- best known for his comedic roles in Knocked Up and Pineapple Express -- and his wife are reportedly the target of Yasin Ajani who claims he is connected to Miller. Ajani trespassed onto Rogen's property on July 16.

TMZ reports Seth Rogen's wife, Lauren Miller, filed a restraining order against Ajani after he attempted to persuade their housekeeper to let him enter the home. He claimed he was delivering an item for Miller. When the housekeeper refused -- she told police Ajani looked "unstable" -- he then proceeded to jump their fence. And it gets creepier. The restraining order obtained by TMZ says Ajani then got cozy by their front yard, relaxing in their lounge chairs. Police were called to the Rogen home and Ajani was arrested on the scene. A judge ruled today Ajani must stay at least 200 yards away from Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller. In addition, TMZ says Ajani is currently undergoing a 72-hour mental health evaluation.

Seth Rogen married longtime girlfriend Lauren Miller last year in Sonoma, California. The two began dating way back in 2004. This is the first reported stalking incident the couple has experienced. TMZ reports Ajani told police, "voices told me to go see and talk with Lauren."

This is Streisand’s first on-screen appearance since she played Ben Stiller’s wacky mother in 2010’s Meet the Fockers. And aside from her role as Roz Focker, Babs hasn’t been in a movie since she played Rose Morgan in The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. The woman with the golden voice turned 70 this summer but she shows no sign of slowing down.

Andy Brewster is finally growing up. He's decided to hit the road to make a name for himself, selling his inventions all across the States. Unfortunately for him , his mother has caught wind of the gig and called shotgun for the cross-country endeavor.

From the miraculous moments that make you say "aww" in the mother-son dynamic to the perpetual teen angst-like embarrassment of your mom cramping your style, Babs and Rogen have got this down.

Together, they've got eight days of bonding and 3000 miles and all the chaos behind it, from sleeping in strip clubs to sales pitches, gambling and hitchhikers.

Nothing like trying to score a date with Mom right around the corner!

It might not be the traditional approach, but the drive proves to be a crash-course mission of camaraderie.

The Guilt Trip

"Notice anything different?" Streisand asks in the brand new TV spot .

"Yeah," Rogen says. "You gamble all night and you get drunk at 7 a.m."

And just look at that cheek-pinching fun. These exclusive pictures give us an inside look at the Rogen-Babs chemistry that will surely move this film in the right direction.

The Guilt Trip marks Babs' first return to the big screen since a similar motherly role in 2010's Meet the Fockers. Streisand may be 70 years old but this four-wheeled adventure shows she's still running strong and will even down a few, just for good measure.

This looks like one hilarious ride!

The Guilt Trip rolls into theaters Dec. 19.
